Valve-to-Valve Clearance
in S&S
®
Cylinder Heads for Shovelhead
S&S cylinder heads for shovelhead models accept valve lifts up to .550”
without coil bind. Because of differences in the timing specifications
and lobe pr
ofiles of different camshafts, however, valve-to-valve
clearance must be closely checked by the engine builder, with .040”
being the required minimum. Clearance can be confirmed by slowly
rotating the engine with the spark plugs removed and observing valve
movement through the spark plug holes.
Under no circumstances should engine rotation be forced if
resistance is encountered. To prevent damage arising from
insufficient valve-to-valve clearance, the engine must rotate with
a minimum of force. Valve-to-valve contact will result in
significant engine damage not covered under warranty.
These cylinder heads normally require no modification for use with
the S&S 514 camshaft. The S&S 495 cam, however, will require that
the cylinder heads be disassembled and additional material removed
from the valve seats. Installed spring height must then be rechecked,
and corrected with shims as necessary.
NOTE: For additional information, refer to S&S Instruction 51-1060,
Installation Instructions for S&S Cylinder Heads for shovelhead models.
